Inside a Historic Downtown Landmark
The Magic Saloon is located inside the historic Reuter Building at 217 Alamo Plaza, a four-story brick structure built in 1891 by German immigrant William Reuter. Just steps from The Alamo in Downtown San Antonio, this charming building showcases Victorian commercial architecture with bay windows that extend outward, detailed cornices, and a decorative roofline that adds character to the city’s skyline.
William Reuter, a well-known local businessman, opened his saloon on the ground floor. The upper floors quickly became meeting spaces for social groups like the Elks Club and The Knights of Pythias. This made the building a fun hub for gatherings in the early 1900s.
Designed by architects James Wahrenberger and Albert Beckmann, the building offers large windows and projecting bays on the upper floors, providing wide views of Alamo Plaza. These details add to the building’s lasting charm and historic value.
Today, The Magic Saloon calls the fourth floor home. The intimate theater blends original features like exposed brick walls, decorative moldings, and high ceilings with modern stage lighting and sound. It creates a setting that feels both authentic and fresh, perfect for a night filled with jaw-dropping illusions and hilarious surprises.
